OC Library to screen 'Alien Boy'

The Oregon City Public Library will show “Alien Boy: The Life and Death of James Chasse,” a feature-length documentary film that chronicles one man’s struggle with schizophrenia and examines the actions of the Portland police officers responsible for his death in 2006.

by: SUBMITTED PHOTO - Using interviews, personal writings, archival footage, official documents and depositions, Director Brian Lindstorm explores James Chasses life and the actions and decisions that led to his death.Sponsored by the library, the event is at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, at the Pioneer Community Center, 615 Fifth St., Oregon City.

The film is part of the library’s First Friday Film Series. The goal of the series is to bring people together to discuss a controversial topic, said Maureen Cole, director of the Oregon City Public Library.

Brian Lindstrom, the Portland filmmaker who made the documentary, will attend the event and lead a discussion afterward.

His film premiered before a packed house at the Portland International Film Festival on Feb. 15, and played for seven weeks in Portland.

Sue Mach, the English Department chairwoman at Clackamas Community College, recommended the film to Cole.

“Last summer, Sue and I got together to talk about how we could work together to bring authors and/or films to Oregon City, which would be of interest to both citizens and students. She had just seen the documentary and thought it was extremely well done.”

Cole agreed to contact Lindstrom to see if he would be willing to come to Oregon City to show the film, which has not been widely released yet.

“He said yes, and I jumped on board, because this is a rare opportunity for attendees to discuss the film with the actual filmmaker,” Cole said.

“Documentaries such as ‘Alien Boy’ are a great way of presenting the story of a person whose experience may be far outside the realm of our own. Documentaries don’t necessarily present all sides of a story or topic, though, and this is why talking to the filmmaker is such a great opportunity,” she said.
