Congressman Schrader to draw Republican challenger

Former congressional staffer Ben Pollock announced on Wednesday that he’s seeking the Republican nomination to challenge Congressman Kurt Schrader (D-Canby), who represents most of Clackamas County, plus the Salem area and the Central Oregon Coast.

by: SUBMITTED - Ben PollockPollock, 28, is proud to be a fourth-generation Oregonian. He plans to champion American economic prosperity, liberty and entrepreneurial spirit.

“I’m running because I’m a member of the generation that’s facing the brunt of the negative effects of Obamacare, this administration’s economically destructive policies, and Congress’ inability to function,” he said. “I’m relatively young, but I was fortunate enough to spend two eye-opening years in Washington where I studied public policy in graduate school and had the opportunity to work at the Capitol. This experience allowed me to see firsthand the dysfunction of Congress and the games professional politicians play with our lives in order to score cheap political points.”

Since a Republican lost against a then-freshman Schrader in 2010, Oregon’s Fifth Congressional District has received a “Safe Democrat” rating from the independent nonpartisan Rothenberg Political Report analysis of voting patterns, demographic information and fundraising. But Pollock’s campaign plans to introduce “successful Republican campaign strategies that have not previously been seen in Oregon” concentrating on social media, big data, microtargeting and grassroots campaigning.
