Nonprofit wants to build farm

A new Portland-area nonprofit called Schoolyard Farms launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo to raise money for a pilot farm at Candy Lane Elementary School, which the Oregon City School District runs near Gladstone.

Schoolyard Farms hopes to go beyond the school garden movement by planting small farms of one acre or more on school grounds, raising food to serve in each school’s cafeteria. “Childhood obesity is at an all-time high and, yet, children are going hungry in Oregon,” said Courtney Leeds, director and founder of Schoolyard Farms.

The new group hopes to raise $17,000 through Indiegogo by Dec. 6.

After the startup phase, the organization hopes to generate revenue by selling produce grown on the farm and to host fee-for-service programs, such as summer camp, after-school cooking and gardening classes.
