Expo offers tips for 'age-friendly' community

Clackamas County is celebrating Older Americans Month in May with a day dedicated to healthy, productive dialogue emphasizing the creation and maintenance of a safe and healthy age-friendly community.

The 2014 engAGE in Community Expo will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, in the Gregory Forum at Clackamas Community College in Oregon City. The fourth-annual expo is free, but registration is strongly encouraged.

The engAGE in Community Expo is part of the ongoing engAGE in Community initiative, a community-based effort to establish Clackamas County as a friendly place for people of all ages. The expo is an opportunity for providers, caregivers, seniors and people with disabilities to learn and share information about healthy, active aging in the county, as well as offer ways to help make it a more age-friendly place.

“The engAGE in Community Expo is an effort to make our county a better place to live, work and play for people of all ages,” said Brenda Durbin, director of Clackamas County Social Services. “It’s a great opportunity for people of all ages to learn more about all of the available resources out there in the community.”

At the expo, participants can share resources, information and upcoming events in the community, visit vendor booths providing information on services and resources, and hear speakers from all over Clackamas County. Speaker session topics include:

1. Creating age-friendly businesses

2. Being an age-conscious consumer

3. Consumer fraud and scam awareness

4. Healthy eating, active living

5. Age-friendly housing options

6. Transportation issues for youth and seniors

7. Fall prevention

The 2014 engAGE in Community Expo is sponsored by Clackamas County Health, Housing & Human Services, the Oregon State University Extension Service, AARP Oregon and Clackamas Community College.
