Local library pride to travel worldwide

Send in your travel photo wearing one of Milwaukie’s new Ledding Library T-shirts before Aug. 31 to be entered into a drawing for a prize.

by: PHOTO COURTESY: SARAH LANDER - Milwaukie City Manager Bill Monahan shows his Ledding Library pride by wearing its new T-shirt at the Great Wall of China with his daughter, Zoe, during a leadership-summit trip in May.Reference librarian Sarah Lander came up with the idea for the contest after seeing a travel photo that City Manager Bill Monahan sent in wearing the library’s new shirt on the Great Wall of China. Ledding Library staffers have a long tradition of taking photos in front of libraries they visit all around the world. They have devoted an entire door inside the library’s staff area to posting employee travel photos.

“Additionally, one of our most asked questions at the adult reference desk is about travel, exotic and domestic,” Lander said. “Often when library patrons return from their trips (the beach, hikes, Europe, India, a cruise, all over the place), they come back to us to share some highlights and their review of the experience, almost like a book review.”

Lander thought having a contest would be a fun way to potentially engage new community members in the library. And by offering a prize, librarians could thank current patrons for their support.

Lander is best known as “The Librarian” who challenges citizens to prove they’re smarter than she at an after-hours trivia night held at a game room near the library. She thinks that community members should participate in nontraditional library programs (such as the contest or trivia night) to learn more about the materials, services and programs the library has to offer, or to be able turn a friend onto the library resources.

“The library often offers more than people think,” she said.

Travel photos can be of locations within the state, but they must be outside of Clackamas, Washington and Multnomah counties. You can expect that your submission will be displayed at the library and on the Ledding Library website.
