Shaka, Yago fundraiser set for this weekend

You’re encouraged to bring your own dog or a neighbor’s and join the fun at this year’s Milwaukie 9KforK9 Walk on Saturday, July 19.

The annual event is the biggest fundraiser for the Milwaukie Police Department’s canine program that consists of Shaka, Officer Billy Wells’ pit bull who has nosed out pounds of narcotics, and Yago, a German Shepherd patrol dog whose primary function is tracking human scent with his partner Officer Les Hall.

Shaka, who has proudly worn her badge since 2011, and Yago who began helping capture suspects last year, will be available for pats and selfies with canine-walk participants.

“The services provided by the canine program enhance the safety and protection of our citizens,” said Sue Richardson, a Milwaukie Public Safety Foundation board member who also represents the Lake Road Neighborhood Association on the Milwaukie Public Safety Advisory Committee’s recommendations to City Council. “In addition, our canines are often requested by other law-enforcement agencies.”

Participants can choose their time to walk, either the first leg with registration at 9 a.m. in the Milwaukie Marketplace parking lot, second leg at 10 a.m., or third leg at 11 a.m. There is a $25 pre-registration fee ($30 on the day of event), which includes a T-shirt, water bottle and dog biscuits. Raffle tickets will be sold for $1 for various prizes.

To register or for more information, refer to 9KforK9.com or contact Carlie Hall at 503-915-9727 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

If you can’t attend the walk, you can still get your dog snack and help support Milwaukie Police K-9 at the same time. By buying the foundation’s new cookbook, you’ll receive a 12-page booklet that contains nine dog treats that you can make at home, along with photos of K-9 officers and safety information. Get yours by ordering it at milwaukiepsf.org for $6 for a PDF version of the book sent to your inbox. There’s also a printed version available for $7.50, which includes shipping and handling, and it will be on sale for $5 at the event this Saturday.
