Clackamas trio make all-state

Hannah Stultz is named to the elite first team

by: JOHN LARIVIERE - Clackamas High senior Hannah Stultz has signed a letter of intent to accept a full-ride scholarship to play volleyball at NCAA Division I volleyball power Murray State University. A three-time Three Rivers League first-team all-league selection as a setter, Stultz helped lead the Cavaliers to three league championships and to third and fifth-place trophies at the 2011 and 2012 Class 6A state championship high school tournaments. She was selected the TRL Player of the Year this fall. The Clackamas Cavaliers made out like bandits in the Oregon high school volleyball all-star balloting.

Seventeen players from around the state were honored in Class 6A and three of those 17 were from Clackamas — seniors Hannah Stultz and Shelby Vasconcellos-Mattocks and junior Taylor Agost.

Stultz was named to the elite first unit, while Vasconcellos-Mattocks and Agost were selected second-team all-state. Agost was the only underclassman to make either the first or second team.

The Cavaliers’ primary setter, Stultz this fall had 988 assists, 196 digs, 93 percent serving with 54 aces, and .422 hitting with 90 kills.

A 5-11 outside hitter/middle blocker, Vasconcellos Mattocks had 364 kills with a .298 hitting percentage, 30 blocks, 51 ace serves, and a 2.20 passing average.

A 6-2 outside hitter/middle blocker, Agost had 402 kills with a .336 hitting percentage, 42 blocks and 42 ace serves.

Stultz has accepted a full-ride scholarship to play volleyball at NCAA Division I power Murray State University.

Murray State coach David Schwepker says of Stultz:

“Hannah is an outstanding setter! As a senior in high school, she has already developed to a high level of setting and understanding of the game. A big part of that could be due to her father being a coach and that she has basically been playing all of her life.

“A setter is the “quarterback” or “point guard” of the volleyball world, so you want your best ball control, most knowledgeable, best court-savvy and athletic athlete in that position. Hannah has all of those qualities!

“For us here at Murray State, I believe that Hannah has the opportunity to have a great career and to continue on with success as a volleyball player at this next level.

“We know that Hannah had a lot of opportunities at other fine universities and we are just very excited that Hannah has chosen to come play for us. We know she will be a long way from home, but we will make Murray State her new ‘home’ for the next four years, and hopefully she can do for us here what she has done during her career at Clackamas High School.”

Stultz was honored as the Three Rivers League Player of the Year this fall. Stultz and Vasconcellos-Mattocks have been first-team all-league selections since they were sophomores.

The Cavaliers this fall went 10-0 in the Three Rivers League (24-6 overall), winning their third straight league title and placing third at the Class 6A State Championship Tournament. They placed fifth at the state tournament in 2011.
