Mustangs make quick-work of Lions
MILWAUKIE It was over half an hour after it began, as Milwaukie High matmen made quick-work of St. Helens, winning 70-6 in a Northwest Oregon Conference dual meet wrestled here Jan. 20.
Only six matches were contested on the mat, and the Mustangs won five of them, four by fall. The visiting Lions spotted the Mustangs 42 points through six forfeits. Neither team had a wrestler at 106.
Were not bad, said Milwaukie coach Robert Lippi. Weve got a lot of sophomores on the team. There are a lot of kids a year away and we could be really good as they gain experience and improve.
Senior Mitchell Ponnay (113), junior Brenton Oten (170), and sophomores Justin Edwards (126) and Chris Burton (138) all won their matches by fall. It took Ponnay just 37 seconds to dispatch with his opponent, while Oten and Burton also took care of business in the first round.
Junior Chase Edwards (145) dominated his opponent en route to a 21-8 major decision. It was his first match at the varsity level.
Lippi singled out Justin Edwards for a standout performance at 126, where he earned his fall over Jeff Vanderwall in 3:36.
Justin wrestled well on his feet, Lippi said. He hit some really nice takedowns.
With the win, Milwaukie improved to 2-0 in NWOC dual meets.
The Mustangs are likely to have their work cut out for them on Tuesday, Jan. 4, when they travel to West Linn for a tournament. Next league meet is Jan. 10 at Liberty.
