Pioneer girls rout Lakeridge, Jesuit

Top-ranked Oregon City takes no hostages in a 97-19 drubbing of Lakeridge

by: MATT SHERMAN - Catelyn Preston (22) and her teammates put on a clinic for the Lakeridge Pacers last Friday. Preston scored a game-high 16 points as the Pioneers upended the Pacers 97-19.If last week’s games are any indication, it’s going to be a cakewalk for top-ranked Oregon City in the Three Rivers League this year.

The Pioneers last week appeared every bit as good as their No. 1-in-the-state OSAA ranking, as they opened TRL play with a 97-19 rout of Lakeridge on Friday, after upending Jesuit 85-26 earlier in the week.

The Pioneers had enough points to win the Lakeridge game in the first quarter, as they rallied around their take-no-hostages defense to outscore the visiting Pacers 37-5 in the opening period. Oregon City was up 72-9 at halftime and the starters played sparingly the rest of the way.

Catelyn Preston (16 points), Montana Walters (12 points, 6 assists), Jaime Goff (10 points, 8 rebounds, 3 blocked shots) and Jessica Gertz (10 points) all reached double digits in scoring on Friday. Fourteen Oregon City girls played and all 14 contributed points to the winning tally.

The Pioneers put on a clinic for the Jesuit Crusaders in a Jan. 8 preseason game at Oregon City. Jesuit couldn’t handle Oregon City’s full-court pressure, as the visiting Crusaders turned the ball over no fewer than 28 times.

Oregon City took charge of the game from the outset, building a 22-6 advantage in the first quarter and a 45-12 lead by halftime.

Johanna Paine (15 points) and Walters (13 points, 12 assists) led a balanced offense that saw 12 players put points on the scoreboard.

Chelsi Brewer headed the defensive onslaught with five steals.

The Pioneers (12-1, 1-0) face their toughest league opponent this Friday, when they play Clackamas on the road.

Ranked third in the OSAA power rankings, the Cavaliers (12-3, 1-0) escaped with a 59-48 win over 12th-ranked West Linn (6-9, 0-1) in a game played at Clackamas last Friday. That game was tied at 45-45 with 5:40 to play.
