Lake Oswego 5-11 point guard Jazz Johnson has made a verbal commitment to play basketball at the University of Portland.

Johnson, who will be a junior at Lake Oswego during the upcoming school year, starred for the Northwest Oregon Conference champion Milwaukie Mustangs last winter, averaging 15.4 points to lead the Mustangs in scoring; and averaging 3.4 assists.

Johnson also received interest from Boise State, San Diego State and Stanford.

Leland Johnson, Jazz’ father, said the decision to go with Portland was made for several reasons.

“He’ll get a good education, the family will be close by to lend support if problems arise and, basketball-wise, the conference they play in is not a bad conference....”
