Alumni rally to aid Gladstone athlete
Jake Wheeler, a former football player at Gladstone High School, was hurt badly in a swimming accident on the Willamette River two weeks ago.
Wheeler broke his neck and is now engaged in rehabilitation efforts at Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland. Wheelers doctors say the paralysis should be temporary, with hopes of a full recovery and mobility in a year.
Alumni have scheduled a $3 barbeque to benefit Wheelers healing expenses to begin at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 7, on GHSs Dick Baker Stadium field, 18800 Portland Ave. Against the state defending champs, the annual girls alumni soccer game will follow at 6:30 p.m.
Teammates are also planning an endowment game for Wheeler against Astoria scheduled for Aug. 30.
