Pioneer booters continue in form
Oregon City continues unbeaten in girls and boys soccer
Oregon City High Schools varsity boys and varsity girls soccer teams both continued successful last week.
The Pioneer girls continued unbeaten, upping their record to 3-0-0 with preseason wins over North Salem (4-0) and McMinnville (2-1).
The Pioneer guys improved their record to 2-0-1, defeating Roosevelt 6-2 and battling to a 2-2 standoff with Madison.
Senior Becca Houk scored with just eight minutes remaining to earn OC girls the win over McMinnville.
Houk got a chip assist from sophomore Lindsi Peters, beat one defender and then took the goalie on one-on-one.
Senior Ashley Simmons put Oregon City on the scoreboard with a goal near the midpoint of the first half.
It was a gorgeous free kick, said Oregon City coach Becket Wright.
McMinnville answered, heading in a corner kick, near the midpoint of the second half.
Wright had Oregon City with 18 shots on-frame and she said Oregon City senior keeper Lizzy Coryell made four saves.
Oregon City guys had five players find the net in their 6-2 win over Roosevelt.
Sophomore Andrew Curtis headed the offense, with two goals and an assist.
Senior Tony Flores had a goal and an assist. Senior Christian Adams, junior Fransisco Ferreyra and sophomore Alvin Salazar added single tallies.
Weve been working hard on set pieces, and its paying off, said Oregon City coach Myque Obiero.
The Pioneer mentor heaped praise on senior defender Jalen Satter: Jalen was huge. He wouldnt let anyone beat him to the ball and that set the tone for the rest of the team.
The score was a reflection of the play. Obiero had his side with a 20-2 advantage in shots on-frame.
Junior Kyle Brewer was in-goal for the Pioneers.
Obiero said that the 2-2 tie with Madison was a very physical game, with the refs letting things get out of hand at times.
Madison stole the game, scoring its second goal with just a minute remaining.
Adams and Curtis scored Oregon Citys lone goals.
Oregon City soccer teams have league games this Thursday, with the Pioneer girls hosting Canby, and the Pioneer boys playing the Cougars in Canby.
