Arntson is nominee for Coach of the Year

The longtime coach is honored for creating one of the top baseball programs in the state at Clackamas High School

by: JON HOUSE - John ArntsonClackamas High School baseball coach John Arntson has been honored by the Oregon Athletic Coaches Association as the Oregon nominee for 2013 National Federation of High Schools Baseball Coach of the Year.

In announcing Arntson’s selection, Rob Younger, associate director of the OACA, explained the criteria for the selection: “Nominees must exemplify the highest standards of sportsmanship, ethical conduct and moral character and carry the endorsement of the respective state high school association. We want them to be not only successful in their respective sports, but also as individuals in their schools and communities. Longevity in coaching is also an important consideration.”

Arntson, who completed his seventeenth season as head baseball coach at Clackamas last spring, has had plenty of success during his tenure.

In 2006 he coached the Cavaliers to their first league baseball championship in school history. Over the past six seasons, Arntson has coached the Cavaliers to three state finals, including state championships in 2008 and 2010.

The past season was especially impressive: The Cavaliers last spring won their second league title, set a new school record for wins in a season (27-4) and made their third state final.

This year’s accomplishments are all the more impressive, considering the circumstances. Clackamas coach John Arntson lost his 7-year-old son Jake in an automobile accident on New Year’s Eve, and the team dedicated the 2013 season to Jake.

Arntson, as Oregon’s nominee for NFHS Coach of the Year, will now compete against baseball coaches from Washington, Montana, Idaho, Alaska and Wyoming for Section 8 Baseball Coach of the Year. If he is a sectional winner, he will then compete with representatives from seven other sections from around the United States for national honors.

Arntson’s coaching peers named him Oregon Class 4A Coach of the Year in 2008 and Class 6A Coach of the Year in 2010 and 2013. But this is the first time Arntson has been a nominee for National Coach of the Year.
