Pioneers get the winning goal in the second half Thursday

by: PAMPLIN MEDIA GROUP: DAVID BALL - Milwaukies Allison Sam makes a throw-in during the first half of Thursdays 1-0 home loss to Sandy. The Milwaukie girls soccer team created some early scoring chances, but couldn’t crack the net during a 1-0 loss to visiting Sandy on Thursday night.

The first chance came when Krista Sanford made a run down the right side and fired a low bouncer toward the goal, but Sandy goalie Cianna Contreras was in position to make the stop.

Moments later, Milwaukie’s Samantha Persad beat her defender through the middle and deflected a shot in front of the goalie only to see the ball squirt about a foot wide of the post.

Persad was on the move again after winning a ball in the corner and sending a crossing pass into the box. The ball skipped off the head of teammate Chelsea Brooks and bounced toward the far post before a Sandy defender cleared it away.

Milwaukie’s ensuing corner kick resulted in a dangerous ball that forced Contreras off her feet at the near post to grab the ball out of a crowd.

While the first 15 minutes were played largely in Sandy’s end, the Pioneers flipped the field before halftime.

The most dangerous ball came with 1:25 to play before intermission when Kira Behan played a ball into the box and Ella Templin deflected it at the front of the goal. Milwaukie goalie Shelby Kennedy moved across the line just in time to make the save.

Sandy would notch the night’s only goal in the second half to leave with its first league win of the season.
