Local gridders get all-state recognition
Clay Valenzuela-Reece and Handsome Smith are named to the elite first teams
Four athletes from Oregon City High School and three from Clackamas have been honored in the Class 6A all-state football balloting. Two athletes from Putnam were honored in 5A; and four Gladstone athletes were honored in 4A.
Oregon City senior defensive back Clay Valenzuela-Reece and Lake Oswego senior wide receiver Jordan Horak were the only players from the Three Rivers League named to the elite first all-star unit.
Oregon City senior offensive lineman Andy Etzel was selected to the second team, along with Canby seniors Craig Folbert (offensive line), Nick Kraxberger (offensive line) and Alejandro Sandoval (defensive line); Lake Oswego seniors Nick Underwood (linebacker) and Horak (defensive back); Lakeridge senior J.R. McLaughlin (wide receiver) and Lakeridge junior Eric Dungey (quarterback).
Meriting honorable mention in the balloting were: Clackamas seniors Dan Sherrell (running back), David Rees (offensive line) and Brody Haehlen (defensive line); Oregon City seniors Zak Merwin (defensive line) and Austin Bjorkman (linebacker); Canby seniors Zach Kraus (center), Austin Taylor (defensive back) and Dominic Shorter (punter); and Lake Oswego senior Wes Johnston (offensive line).
In Class 5A, Putnam senior kicker Bella Geist and Putnam senior offensive lineman Austin Snyder both received honorable mention in the all-state balloting.
Gladstone junior Handsome Smith got lots of recognition in Class 4A, making the first team as a running back and the second team as a defensive back. He was one of only two underclassmen on the first offensive team.
Gladstone senior linebacker Trevor Browning joined Smith on the second defensive team. Gladstone senior defensive lineman Sam Twigger and Gladiator junior center Austin Krieger garnered honorable mention in the all-state balloting.
