Young people and adults interested in making a little extra money this spring and summer should consider umpiring.
The Clackamas County Sports Officials Association pays $30 to umpire youth fastpitch softball games in the area; and $24 for an adult slowpitch game, and adult umpiring assignments are usually doubleheaders.
No experience is necessary, although youth umpires must be at least 14 years of age. Clackamas County Amateur Softball Association umpire-in-chief Paul Roeger has scheduled a 10-session umpire clinic beginning Feb. 18. Prospective umpires will meet twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. at Gladstone High School, beginning on Feb. 18.
The registration fee for the clinic is $50 for youth under age 18 and $60 for those 18-and-over. The fee covers a rule book, the ASA certification fee and insurance.
The season begins in late April for youth fastpitch softball; adult slowpitch runs the year around, although most of the games are played in late April through the month of August.
