Sox off to 8-2 start
The Oregon City Black Sox have had their share of success in OIBA high school summer baseball.
Through play last Friday the Sox sported an 8-2 record on the 2014 summer season.
They had wins over Wilson (9-8), Jesuit (11-4), North Kitsap Legion (3-0), Barlow (6-4), Southridge (9-3), La Salle (8-6), Hillsboro (3-2) and Reynolds (8-7).
Junior Cory Lay was hitting up a storm, with 10 hits in 25 at bats, for a .400 batting average.
Seniors Kevin MacDonald (.333) and Austin Johnson (.321) were also getting the job done with their bats, as was junior Jacob Marquez (.316).
Johnson had three doubles and a team-high seven RBI; Marquez had two doubles and a triple.
Junior Tyler Sheldon (.265) had a team-high 12 runs scored, and he had three doubles. Senior Zack Sprague had six RBI.
Johnson was the top pitcher, with a 3-0 record and 20 strikeouts and only eight hits allowed in 19 innings of work.
Other pitchers with wins included senior Colin Smith and juniors Sean Flynn, Taylor Cloyd, Alec McAlbin and Christian Hood.
The Oregon City Black Sox host a wood bat tournament at Bauer Field Thursday through Sunday (June 26-29). They play Wilson Thursday at 9:30 a.m. and again Friday at noon in pool play.
The Sox entertain Lake Oswego at 7 p.m. on Monday, June 30, and Sherwood at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 2.
