Glads face tough competition

Playing a tough schedule, Gladstone’s OIBA summer baseball team dropped two of its first four games.

They defeated Grant 3-2 and Sandy 6-5, but came up short in games with Sherwood (3-2), Clackamas (6-3), Franklin (8-3) and Putnam (4-0).

“We were missing some guys, but we played well against Grant, Sherwood, Sandy and Clackamas,” said Gladstone coach Casey Webster. “The Clackamas and Sherwood games could have just as easily gone the other way....”

Webster says he likes what he’s seen in early summer play from Andrew Gross at shortstop, Logan Saltares at first and third, Darnell Washington at first and third “and with his bat,” Ben Fox in center and “with his bat,” Branden Loehr behind the dish, and Trask Telesmanich and Austin Krieger on the mound.

Loehr (.375) and Fox (.333) were Gladstone’ top hitters through play last weekend.

Krieger had 14 strikeouts in 13-1/3 innings; Telesmanich had a 1.2 ERA, with seven strikeouts in 11-2/3 innings.

The Gladiators are in a tournament at Oregon City High School Thursday through Sunday.

Their tournament openers are Thursday at 9:30 a.m. with Portland’s Northwest Star all-star team, and at Thursday at 1 p.m. with Lacey, Washington.
