'Give My Regards to Broadway' at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 29, at the Rose Villa Performing Arts Center, 13505 S.E. River Road, in Oak Grove

New Century Players will give a musical gift to the Milwaukie area by presenting "Give My Regards to Broadway" at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 29. The cabaret-style show is a fundraiser for NCP and will be staged at the Rose Villa Performing Arts Center, 13505 S.E. River Road, in Oak Grove.

"Our company cannot operate on ticket sales alone, so every once in a while we need to do a fundraiser to help support the expenses of our upcoming season," said Kelly Marchant, the artistic director of New Century Players.

"We've done a cabaret in the past, and it was a lot of fun and very successful. It gives our musical theater artists another opportunity to perform," she said.

The company will announce its next season at the event, and among the upcoming offerings are two musicals.

"The performing fees charged by the publishers for musicals are significantly higher than for regular plays. We're talking thousands as opposed to hundreds of dollars," said Kevin Yell, an NCP board member.

All three will perform in the fundraiser 'Give My Regards to Broadway' on July 29. "It is impossible to cover the cost of these shows without either a fundraiser, several very generous sponsors, or very high ticket prices. As we are a community theater, we don't want to charge too much, because we want everyone to be able to afford to come," he said.

Standards, favorites

Nearly all the songs in the cabaret will be Broadway favorites, including a preview of a duet from NCP's first offering of next season "I Do! I Do!," sung by the two leads, Kerie Geni Darner and Dirk Foley.

While this will be Darner's first show for NCP, Foley played Captain Wentworth in "Persuasion" and was one of four singers in "Stairway to Paradise," both during NCP's 2016-17 season.

David Hastings, who was Cosme in last season's "Glorious!," will add in some special piano/singing moments.

Hastings "was [also] the arranger and leader of our great band for the largely Gershwin show, 'Stairway to Paradise.' [It] sold really well, folks had a great time and he was a big part of that," Yell said.

Marchant will share hosting duties for "Give My Regards To Broadway" with Yell, who also will perform "Luck Be a Lady" from "Guys and Dolls."

"It's always been a favorite number. I hope we get to do that show one day," he said.

Community support

New Century Players is a nonprofit theater group founded in 2004 with the mission to build community in the greater Milwaukie area by providing opportunities for artistic expression through live performances.

People should attend the fundraiser because it will be fun, Yell said.

"Many folks who have been leads in our musicals over the past few years will be coming back to sing, and then on top of that, of course, we hope people will want to support the company," he noted.

"People who enjoy live music with a glass of wine and a bite to eat will have an enjoyable evening. If people want to support local live theater, this is an excellent way to do it," Marchant said.

Yell added: "We have been in the area offering high-quality theater for many years now. We hope people will want to say thank you with a nice donation on top of their ticket price."
