Olsen represents Senate District 20, which covers Oregon City, Gladstone, Jennings Lodge, Estacada, Mulino, Beavercreek, Redland and Canby.

I would like to respond to a letter from Mr. Bob Cordell of Redland, Oregon. He has stated, because of a report from the Oregon League of Conservation Voters, that I am not an environmentalist. To the contrary, I have always supported a strong and vibrant environment. Which of us does not want clean air and pristine streams? As an avid fishermen, I have consistently supported strong regulations to protect the natural resources in our state.

As a state senator, what I am wary of, and what I do vote against, is the constant push to have Alan OlsenOregonians pay more for the energy that they dearly need. Higher fuel costs of up to 10 cents per gallon, with no improvement to roads, employee taxes to pay for mass transit that most employees will not be able to use, along with a sales tax on new cars to give incentives to those few who would buy an electric car, and tolling on freeways we taxpayers have already paid for. That was the transportation package.

We borrowed $100 million on the state-owned Elliot Forest to put money into schools. We already owned this land free and clear and now it is encumbered by this debt. This is not the way to manage taxpayer dollars.

The "Clean Energy Jobs" bill so highly touted by the OLCV will cost Oregonians $700 million per year to save a miniscule amount of carbon-dioxide emissions. This tax will impact lower income families, seniors and minorities the hardest, all to reduce our carbon-dioxide output, which at this time is 0.14 percent of the worlds' output. I do not think the meager reduction is worth the $700 million price tag. That is why OLCV opposes me.

My job is to protect Oregonians from the zealots who would tax Oregonians into oblivion.

Canby resident Alan Olsen is the state senator for Senate District 20, which covers Oregon City, Gladstone, Jennings Lodge, Estacada, Mulino, Beavercreek, Redland and Canby.
