Kim Nolan Batchelor

Oct. 14, 1957-May 28, 2012

Estacada resident Kim Batchelor died at his home Monday, May 28, following a long battle with cancer. He was 54 years old.

A celebration of his life was held June 1 at Springwater Presbyterian Church. Private inurnment will be at Springwater Cemetery.

Kim Nolan Batchelor was born Oct. 14, 1957, in Anaheim, Calif., to James and Ellen (Winn) Batchelor. They moved to Hillsboro when he was 3 years old.

He was raised mainly in the Sandy area and attended Reynolds High School before entering the Army after high school.

Kim married Angeline Austin on July 1, 1978, in Portland. They had three children and later divorced. He married Mary Neigel on May 14, 1993, in Portland. After raising their combined family of five children in Northeast. Portland, they moved to Estacada in 2003.

Kim was employed as a steel worker at Benz Spring from 1978-1988, then as a mechanic at WW Truck and Trailer. In 1990, initially hired as laborer for the city of Portland Bureau of Maintenance, he rose through the ranks to become a utility worker and then an equipment operator, fulfilling a boyhood dream of driving a street sweeper. He left employment with the city due to health issues in 2000.

Always involved with his kids, Kim was a coach and umpire for Little League in the Lakeside and Gregory Heights areas in the early and mid-1990s.

Kim had an inimitable sense of humor, even in his last days. He enjoyed skiing, fishing, camping, canoeing, hiking, photography, cooking, gardening and bird watching, and loved spending time with his grandchildren. He was very active in the Springwater Grange and enjoyed constructing props and acting in more than five of their annual melodramas.

In recent years, he proudly referred to himself as a "farmer" of Muscovy ducks, even training some of them to eat from his hand.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Neigel of Estacada; daughter, Tiffany Phipps (Cody) of Southhaven, Miss.; sons, Austin Batchelor (Christina) of Hillsboro and Adam Batchelor (Jeannie) of Beaverton; stepsons, Jordan Wiley, currently on assignment in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and Nicholas Sheldon of Agen, France; mother, Ellen Batchelor of Yelm, Wash.; brother, Dennis Batchelor (Linda), also of Yelm; sisters, Vickie Downard (Daniel) of Milwaukie and Kathy Batchelor (Charles) of Wood Village; many nieces and nephews; and grandchildren, Haley, Ethyn, Kyle, Emma, Courtney and Kyra.

Kim asked for remembrances in his honor to be made to the Springwater Grange 263.

Estacada Funeral Chapel is in care of the arrangements.
