New rescue truck to save district cash

New light rescue unit is now serving residents of the Estacada Rural Fire District

The Estacada Rural Fire District has a new, extended-cab Ford pickup. With this purchase, the department expects to save money on operating costs, extend the life of other district vehicles and increase the efficiency of the fire department’s operation.

During a nine-month trial period, the concept was proven to save costs, and Fire Chief Bob Morrisey is certain the district will save big bucks when the life of its large equipment is extended.

Morrisey is calling the new truck a “light rescue,” and it is destined to be used on at least 75 percent of local medical calls. Since medical calls comprise about 80 percent of the district’s 1,300 calls each year, the light rescue will be used often.

“This rescue is configured to handle most of our home first aids and incidents with only one patient,” Morrisey said. “It allows us to maneuver more easily into areas that potentially have clearance problems.”

But in addition, sending the light rescue to the bulk of medical calls allows the department to keep its special rescue equipment such as the “Jaws of Life” centrally located at the fire station inside its larger rescue truck to deploy only when it is needed.

“Running the new light rescue will allow us to make changes in the apparatus replacement schedules,” Morrisey said, “which will allow us to get more use out of the apparatus we have.”

The additional truck gives the department the ability to respond appropriately, even when it receives two calls at the same time.

The new truck also has features added that rescuers have learned through practice would be helpful to assist in their mission.

Access to the covered pickup bed is gained from both sides, and shelves containing equipment roll out easily through the back doors.

The unit also has additional lighting inside and outside the truck, which is equipped with as much high-tech equipment as all other emergency responders.
