Fetzs performance to be evaluated Sept. 12

School board will vote on extending superintendents contract for one more year

Initially, Howard Fetz decided that the 2012-13 school year would be his last. Recently, however, he had a change of heart and decided that he wants to give it a go for one final year through 2014.

On Wednesday, Sept. 12, the school board will vote on whether to extend his contract for the additional year.

“He has a contract through next June and this would be for the 2013-14 school year,” board chairman Mark Greene said. “He thinks that will be his last.”

In order to prepare for the action item, the school board held an executive session Aug. 29 to discuss the issue.

“One of the reasons we had to rush this ahead of the normal evaluation process is because if we decided he wasn’t doing a good job, we needed to start a search right away,” Greene said. “We had to evaluate his performance, so we didn’t make any decisions, we just talked about it. If we agree he’s doing a good job, then he’ll get an extension.”

Greene was sure to point out that the presence of an action item on this month’s agenda has nothing to do with the outcome of the executive session discussion, but that it would have been voted on regardless of the nature of their talks.

“If he gets a contract extension, it will mean a majority of us think he’s doing a good job and if he doesn’t, it means we think we need a change,” Greene said.

The school board meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sept. 12 in the Estacada High School choir room. The board will take public comments during that meeting.
