Delores Collins Douglass

June 8, 1942 — Sept. 3, 2012

Delores Collins Douglass, a resident of East Multnomah County, died on Sept. 3 in Portland surrounded by her family. She was 70.

Delores was born on June 8, 1942, in Grants Pass and was the daughter of Joseph and Joy (Nomer) Collins. She grew up in Thurston and graduated from Springfield High School.

Delores attended San Jose Bible College where she studied ministry. She later completed her bachelor’s degree at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, and took her master’s courses in counseling at Warner Pacific College.

On June 7, 1963, she married Harry Douglass in Thurston. They lived in Brazil, Mexico and Argentina for many years where they did mission work. They also pastored churches in Arizona, New Mexico and at Estacada Christian Church.

They moved to East Portland in 1991. Delores worked as an early childhood and elementary bilingual teacher’s aid for the Reynolds School District at Fairview Elementary School.

She retired in 2007 and kept busy attending all the school and life events of her grandchildren and caring for Abbey and Natalie.

She enjoyed most activities with her family and friends. The children she taught and cared for and many churches were touched by the music she made. Knitting, working with children and reading with a great cup of coffee brought her joy.

Her family and friends were very important to her and she adored her bird, Gussie. She was the surrogate “Grammy” to many children and was always ready to sew up an outfit or costume.

She was a member most recently of Iglesia de Christo in Gresham, where she played the piano and taught the children’s classes for years. She was a member of the Estacada Christian Fellowship.

Delores is survived by her husband, Harry of Portland, son, Fred Douglass of California, daughters, Bernadine Douglass Portland and Helene Douglass of Boring, brothers, Douglas Collins of Idaho and Joe Collins of Thurston and sister, Helene Tolson of California along with six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her granddaughter Lauren Douglass Olson

A celebration of life service will be held on Sept. 14 at 2 p.m. at East Hill Church. A family inurnment will take place at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Contributions may be made in memory of Delores to the Voice of the Martyrs. Bateman Carroll Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
