Festival of the Fungus is back


Mushroom-themed event will span October

The second annual Festival of the Fungus is scheduled for Oct. 13, 27 and 28.

Included in the activities are educational events, an art show and local food offerings.

New this year is a mushroom hike guided by Steve Schmidt, a horticulturist with Sustainable Mushroom Adventure Tours All events are free to the public.

• The kickoff event for the festival is a slide show and discussion from 12:30-3:30 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Estacada Public Library. The discussion is led by mushroom expert Jake Hurlbert from the Pacific Northwest Mycological Society. This free presentation is titled “The Ecology of Willamette Valley Mushrooms.”

• A guided “Fun Foray for Fungus” hike will take place Saturday, Oct. 27. The hike is free, but registration is required, as there is a limit of 20 participants.

The hike is in the National Forest located outside Estacada; directions will be provided on the festival’s website at estacadafungusfest.com. A list of essential supplies needed for this hunt and information about obtaining a mushroom picking permit also are avakilable at the website.

• From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 28 there will be a mushroom identification clinic and a mushroom themed art show at the Estacada Public Library.

The public is encouraged to bring found mushrooms to this event for identification by Hurlbert.

Mushrooms should be relatively fresh (one or two days old) and wrapped in waxed paper (not plastic wrap).

Mushroom-themed art in a variety of media will be available for viewing and for sale.

Several local restaurants will offer mushroom menus for the weekend. A list of participating eateries and directions to them will be available at the event.
