by: CONTRIBUTED PHOTO: CLACKAMAS COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE - A 19-year-old man was driving this Toyota 4-Runner that rolled on a forest road near Estacada on March 30. One person died and six others were injured in the crash. A 17-year-old boy from Milwaukie, Nicholas Portis, died from his injuries received in a rollover crash while returning home from a party where alcohol was consumed on the Mt. Hood National Forest, police reported.

On Saturday, March 30, at approximately 10:46 p.m., Clackamas County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a crash on a Forest Service road outside Estacada.

It was reported that an open-backed Toyota 4-Runner had rolled over with seven passengers inside. Six of the passengers in the 4-Runner were injured in the crash.

The crash happened in an area with no cell phone coverage, so the victims were loaded in other vehicles and transported to Hillockburn Road and Highway 211 where they were met by medical personnel and transported to area hospitals.

The names of those who were injured are being withheld because they are under 18 years old. They are being treated at local hospitals. None of the other injuries are life threatening.

Police say the victims were all part of a large group of teenagers who had been gathering up in the woods throughout the night.

The driver of the vehicle, Joseph Childs, 19, was injured in the crash. The investigation continues, however, police suspect alcohol and speed were contributing factors in the crash.
