TV crews take over downtown

Filming of TNT pilot episode creates a stir for business owners

by: SUBMITTED PHOTO - Geena Davis“Geena D. drinks for free” appeared on the specials board last Tuesday at Duffy’s Irish Pub in downtown Milwaukie, but the Hollywood star was too busy just outside of the bar filming a TNT series to take advantage of the offer.

Geena Davis, an Oscar winner and co-executive producer of the show, stars as a “quirky bounty hunter” inspired by the real-life story of Mackenzie Green. Milwaukie’s streets will star as rainy Seattle. But production crews landed an unusually sunny April 2, so they had to hire a truck with a water tank to soak their set along Washington Street.

Businesses stayed open and traffic flowed periodically through flaggers. Throughout the day, production crews would yell “lock it down” to clear everyone out before running the same scenes over and over again.

“It’s pretty interesting seeing the process of everyone scrambling,” said pub owner Matt Rayner.

Rayner was surprised to find that production crews had installed a front Washington license plate on his gold Toyota Camry while it was parked outside the pub. He only discovered the discrepancy when a crew member yelled, “We need you to park back where you were!” as he returned from the gas station. Rayner worried that he could have been stopped by police with mismatched license plates, and that the $100 that TV crews gave him didn’t cover the business he lost by people not realizing he was open.

Scenes involved a conversation in front of Milwaukie Lumber and Davis’ character driving a Ford Explorer to chase a suspect played by Riley Smith, whose television credits include “CSI” and “24.” She’s “an unconventional bail bondswoman and bounty hunter whose eccentric personality and unusual tactics give her an advantage in a tough and unpredictable business,” according to the official description of the show.

Director Dean Devlin has not shared his name for the show or a planned date to broadcast the pilot episode. Former Portlander Scott Prendergast and Leverage writer-producer Amy Berg wrote the script.
