Six acres of brush burn; no one is injured

by: CONTRIBUTED PHOTO: CAROLE STAATZ - A small brush fire broke out on the 39000 block of Southeast George Road on the morning of Saturday, May 4.Estacada resident Carol Staatz heard a series of disturbing popping sounds outside of her home on the 39000 block of Southeast George Road on the morning of Saturday, May 4.

A falling tree branch had brought down a power line and ignited underbrush.

Staatz said the “wall of flame” took off “like you wouldn’t believe” burning up brush across the street from Staatz’ house, aided by a strong wind.

Staatz dialed 9-1-1 and alerted neighbors right away.

More than 20 firefighters from Estacada, Sandy, Boring and Oregon Department of Forestry responded to the scene.

Estacada Rural Fire District Deputy Chief Fred Hertel said six acres of brush went up in flames. There were no injuries.

It took six hours to bring the fire under control.

“(I’m) glad the outcome of this fire was what it was and the wind blew it the other way .. Our home was right there across the road,” Staatz said.
