Estacada School District will offer free lunches

The Estacada School District is getting ready to launch its Summer Food Service Program.

“It’s for anybody. You don’t have to sign up. There’s no registration for this food. You just have to be 18 years or younger,” said Nutrition Services Assistant Julie Theander. “As long as you are a child, you will be fed.”

Starting June 24, free lunches for children under the age of 18 will be offered at Clackamas River Elementary, Eagle Crest Mobile Estates, Eagle Creek Elementary and Estacada Skate/Park library.

Clackamas River Elementary will also host a free breakfast.

“We try to go where we can reach the largest population of students,” Theander said of the site selection.

Theander explained that as 54 percent of the students in the Estacada School District are on free or reduced lunches, which qualifies the district for the federally funded Summer Food Service Program.

She said that last year up to 200 kids came to the daily lunches at Clackamas River Elementary.

Children do not need to be accompanied by an adult to enjoy a meal.

“It’s amazing how many kids do come up on their own,” said Operations Director, Gary Lewis.

He explained that for some kids, this may be the one meal they get to eat all day.

Theander explained that the meals are nutritionally balanced. Fruits, vegetables, milk and grains are included with each meal.

While the district is excited to offer an expanded program this year, they are also feeling the major loss of one Greg Lynch- the school district’s former Food Services, Maintenance, Facilities and Custodial Services Manager who passed away earlier this year.

“He was our champion,” Theander said. “Greg Lynch was really big on nutrition for kids. His whole life had been in nutrition. He did expand the program. He was instrumental in making it blossom.”

“Not having his expertise anymore is a huge loss to our district,” Lewis said.

Theander noted that the success of the program is Lynch’s legacy.
