Crash near Estacada leaves four injured
A Damascus man who reportedly was driving while intoxicated remains hospitalized following a Sunday morning crash that also injured his three passengers.
Kyle E. Elgin, 24, of Damascus was driving a 2002 Toyota Tundra 4-door pickup westbound on Highway 224 about two miles east of Estacada when he lost control of the vehicle, which went into a ditch, rolled and came to rest on its side at about 5 a.m. Sunday, June 30, said Lt. Gregg Hastings, Oregon State Police spokesman.
Elgin, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was transported via LifeFlight helicopter to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland for treatment of serious injuries, Hastings said. As of Tuesday, July 2, Elgin had been upgraded to good condition.
His three passengers also were treated at local hospitals for what are described as minor injuries and released. They include Shon Shiiki, 22, of Gresham; Sara Erickson, 19, of Oregon City; and Kyle Volpel, 23, also of Oregon City. All three were wearing seatbelts, Hastings said.
Oregon State Troopers cited Elgin for driving under the influence of intoxicants. The case remains under investigation and will be forwarded to the Clackamas County District Attorney's Office for consideration of additional charges.
