Forest Service warns of high fire danger

The Mt. Hood National Forest has issued a warning that while campfires are still allowed in fire rings in most developed campgrounds, campfires are prohibited at remote, walk-in campgrounds on the eastside of the forest.

Firefighting crews have been called several times in the last few months to extinguish human-caused fires on forest lands.

Wildfires spread quickly and are difficult to control in hot, dry weather.

The forest service requests that campers use extreme caution with campfires in permitted areas.

Campfires may not be left unattended. The campfire must be drowned in water and the embers stirred in water. The coals must be cold to touch before they may be left unattended.

The forest service warns that anyone found to have started a fire may be held responsible for property damage, staffing to fight fire and criminal charges if there is any loss of life.
