Sandy officers respond to after-hours Estacada calls

As the city of Estacada prepared to transition from its long-standing law enforcement contract with the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office to contract with the Sandy Police Department earlier this year, one of the main areas of confusion was how incidents that occurred when an officer was not on duty in Estacada would be handled.

Sandy Police Sgt. Ernie Roberts said a system has been hammered out.

“We wanted to make sure when calls came in for service when there wasn’t an Estacada officer, our people knew exactly what to do with them,” he said.

Roberts said it’s been going smoothly so far.

Dispatch directs calls to an on-duty Sandy officer when there is no Estacada officer on duty.

The nearest Sandy officer or sheriff’s deputy will respond to “hot” calls. “Hot” calls are those that can’t wait, such as violent incidents or crimes-in-progress.

The Sandy officer who receives a “cold” call, such as a theft that is not actively in progress, will make a judgment call on whether to handle the call by phone or to respond immediately in person.

“When (Estacada area citizens) call, they’re going to get a response no matter what,” Roberts said.

Roberts said the Estacada officers’ schedules are not set in stone.

Sandy Police Chief Kim Yamashita told the Estacada News in August that the Estacada officers will work rotating shifts so wrong-doers will not be able to predict when an officer will be on duty.

Roberts said the department wants an officer on duty during the times when police receive the highest number of Estacada calls.

As the department amasses Estacada call data, the Estacada officers’ schedules will be adjusted in order to have a presence in the times of highest need.
