Businesses rally for Red Ribbon Week

by: SANDRA HUNT - The Estacada Area Support Our Troops Foundation was one of several organizations that participated in Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbons were hung around the Estacada Veterans Memorial. As of Drug-free Estacada Families and Youth (DEFY) Director Susie Tracy’s last count on Monday, Oct. 28, 34 Estacada area businesses have signed up to participate in Red Ribbon Week.

Red Ribbon Week is a national campaign honoring slain DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena.

“The prevention world is very much involved with Red Ribbon Week because it presents an opportunity for communities to unite,” Tracy said. “It’s really a call to action for a community to unite and push back against drugs.”

DEFY organizers made a large red door ribbon, self-adhesive customer ribbons, a Red Ribbon Week Poster, staff lapel pins and candy with drug-free messages on the wrappers available to participating businesses.

“The response has been overwhelmingly supportive and enthusiastic,” Tracy said.

In addition, Mayor Brent Dodrill proclaimed the week of Oct. 23-31 as Estacada Red Ribbon Week.

In the spirit of the week, DEFY supported the Estacada High School youth coalition, “Above the Influence,” in their efforts to a hold a drug and alcohol-free homecoming tailgate party and brought prevention trainer Stephanie Siete to speak at assemblies at the high school and junior high.

On Halloween, DEFY representatives will pass out candy with drug-free messages on the wrappers during the Chamber of Commerce’s Creepy Crawl in the downtown area.
