Discussion on aligning early childhood education held

by: CONTRIBUTED - Clackamas River Elementary Principal Seth Johnson collaborates with group members on how to prepare children to meet one of the common core standards for kindergarten.More than 40 educators, community members and several school board directors attended the P-3 Alignment Summit at River Mill Education Center on Monday, Oct. 14, to discuss early childhood education.

Eagle Creek Elementary Principal Dan Draper told the crowd that the intent of the summit was not to put area preschools out of business, but “to work together on a more sophisticated level to get kids kindergarten ready.”

“I believe there are a lot of kids in the community who are not being served,” Draper said.

Lennie Bjornsen told the crowd how the Gladstone Center for Children and Families came to be and Karen Gorton, an early childhood planner for Clackamas County, discussed the role of the community in early childhood education.

The audience split into groups to brainstorm on how to prepare children to meet various Common Core standards for kindergarten.
