Colton firefighter drowns 30 miles east of Estacada

Justin Faijo, a Colton volunteer firefighter, died on Saturday night when his boat capsized at Harriet Lake, approximately 30 miles east of Estacada.

Rescuers were called to the lake on second-hand information of the boat capsizing around 8 p.m. Saturday, March 31, and the Clackamas County Water Rescue Consortium all responded. Because of weather conditions and the rural location of the incident, it took rescuers more than an hour to arrive on scene.

The boat had two fishermen in it, and one of the two - showing symptoms of hypothermia - was reportedly assisted to shore by his father.

The second fisherman, Faijo, was discovered in the clear 10-foot deep water about 10 minutes after rescuers arrived. He was pronounced dead at 9:30 p.m.

'Justin was a great firefighter and asset to the department,' Colton Fire Chief Richard Beaudoin said. 'There will be a great loss felt not only in the Colton Fire Department, but to the community as a whole.'
