Deadline is Saturday, July 26

When you're downtown at the Estacada Summer Celebration Saturday, July 26, don't forget to stop by the Estacada Library table and sign up for the Summer Reading Program. It's the last day to sign up and it's not just for kids any more.

For the first time in several years, the library is including a summer reading program for adults, and there are prizes for all ages. The grand prize for adults is a $50 gift certification good for admission, gift shop and snack bar at the Oregon Garden. Two second-place drawings will be held for an “I Love Oregon” prize package and a garden lover's package. To win prizes, adults have to read at least five books, listen to five audiotapes or watch five movies in any combination by Aug. 31 Then they keep a log and bring it to the library to claim prizes with an option to earn two bonus raffle tickets by doing extra credit game sheets or book reviews.

Children 0-12 can sign up and read or be read to for 20 minutes a day and strandards are higher for teens, but according to a library brochure, “this includes books, magazines, comics, graphic novels, instructions and even cereal boxes.” Audio books count as well and for just signing up, kids will get a coupon to the Family Fun Center for mini golf or Kidopolis Playland, a voucher for free admission to a Portland Thorns game and other fun stuff.

When they complete the reading program, kids can get a voucher for a preseason Blazers game, coupon for an Oaks Park ride bracelet, a free swim at North Clackamas Aquatic Park and raffle tickets for prize drawings.

Wade Street, but it's not just about prizes, said Library Director Michele Kinnamon, because reading is good for all of us.

As adults, she said, we can escape our stresses when we sit down for a while a read a good book.

“Let your mind go to another place and become wrapped up in other people's stories,” she said. “It is an escape and don't think you have to read a whole lot. Just read a little bit every day.”

Reading is even more important for students, she said, to keep their minds sharp.

“We want to keep them reading during 'the summer slide' when they can lose up to three months of reading at school if they don't continue reading at a regular interval,” she said. “We want to help keep their reading level at grade level and also to get people to come to the library on a regular basis. We have children's, teen's and adult's programs.”
