Whether you're interested in having a front row seat to logging competitions or participating in a parade, there will be plenty to do in Estacada on Independence Day.

Tuesday, July 4, will begin with the city's annual Fourth of July Parade, sponsored by the Estacada Development Association. The theme of the 2017 parade is "Treasures of Estacada."

Connie Redmond of the Estacada Development Association explained that the theme is meant to celebrate the people, natural resources and other elements of the city that make it one of a kind.

She added that she believes the city's most important treasure is its residents.

"The people really make Estacada what it is," she said. "Even going back to the logging days, the treasures were the people who have been here and helped build our heritage."

The parade will also celebrate Estacada's thriving arts scene, which Redmond describes as another treasure. Representatives from the city's arts community will be the parade's grand marshals.

The Fourth of July Parade will begin at 10 a.m. at Estacada High School, 355 N.E. Sixth Ave., before making its way down Main Street and then back up Broadway Street.

Those who wish to enter the parade can pick up an application at City Hall, 475 S.E. Main St. Applications should be returned to City Hall by 4 p.m. Monday, July 3. Entree fees are $15 for floats, $2 per person for music groups or marching bands, $10 for motorized vehicles, $5 for equestrian groups, $5 each for other animals and $2 each for people who wish to walk in the parade. Those who register the day of the parade will be charged an additional $5, so participants are encouraged to do so in advance.

Redmond looks forward to the parade.

"It's fun to see," she said. "People are so creative in their decorating."

Meanwhile, participants will rev up their chainsaws for the annual Estacada Timber Festival, scheduled for 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday, July 4, at Timber Park, 30878 N.W. Evergreen Way.FILE PHOTO - A variety of competitive events will take place at the Estacada Timber Festival, scheduled this year for Tuesday, July 4.

The annual festival pays tribute to the role the logging industry has played in Estacada's history. The event features timber competitions, such as climbing a 50-foot-tall tree, racing to cut through a log with chain saws and axe throwing.

Attendees can participate in these events or simply watch the fun. Since amateur competitors are encouraged to participate, the festival's competitive events are a good way for novices to further develop their skills.

The event also features a variety of vendors, food and live music. Country group CALICO and rock band Crush will take the stage starting at 4:45 p.m.

The day will conclude with a bang — a fireworks show begins at 10 p.m.
