With summer vacation nearing its last few weeks, members of the Estacada Community Outreach team are preparing an event to ensure children have one last hurrah in the sunshine and are prepared for the coming school year.
The annual Back to School Blast is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at Clackamas Valley Baptist Church, 29275 S.E. Eagle Creek Road.
The day will feature an opportunity for each student in attendance to receive a backpack filled with school supplies and complimentary lunch. There will also be a variety of games and activities in which to participate.
Karen Armstrong of Estacada Community Outreach said the group started the event five years ago in order to support local families and students, whether they're entering kindergarten or high school.
"We felt the need to help out," she said. "We buy backpacks with school supplies based off school supply lists and have common things for each age group."
The day features activities like ring toss, face painting and a bounce house. There will also be hot dogs, chips, drinks, popcorn and cotton candy. Children and parents can receive a free lunch at the event.
Last year, about 150 children attended the Back to School Blast.
Armstrong said her favorite part of the day is "watching the kids' excited faces."
"They're excited to have the supplies and play games," she added. "I love seeing all of the smiles."
She encouraged any local families interested in attending to do so.
"We're here to help, and it's a fun day," she said. "Bring your kids and have a blast."
