The U.S. Forest Service used helicopters to fly in tables and toilets to “back country lakes” in the Estacada area of the Mt. Hood National Forest. Forest Service officials hoped this would help solve sanitation problems at Memaloose Lake and Serene Lake.

A citizen angrily described the “confusing and dangerous intersection” at Sixth and Main Street to the Estacada City Council. He said he’d been injured in a collision there and if he was ever injured there again he would sue the city.

Mayor John Rowley got annoyed and pounded his gavel to end the discussion. A councilor said he would like for the city to study the problem at the intersection.

Cyclists from Cycle Oregon IV swarmed into Estacada for lunch in Timber Park before heading to Oregon City.

The paper’s thought of the week came from Walter Bagehot: “The reason why so few good books are written is that so few people who can write know anything.”

The school board voted to extend Estacada School District Superintendent Howard Fetz’ contract through spring 2014. It had been set to expire in spring 2013.

Board members Rick Mudrow and Sonja McCarty voted against the extension.

“I don’t have any bones to pick with Howard (Fetz). I just feel like the district needs to focus differently and to bring in some new ideas,” Mudrow said. “This was the perfect time to do this, because it would have given us a year to search for a new candidate. Unfortunately the politics here are a little bumpy. What’s important is what’s best for the district, taxpayers and the kids, and I just think it’s time for change. I’m trying to represent what people are asking for, and they’re asking for change.”

In other news, the Spiral Gallery artist coop was getting ready to celebrate 10 years in business as of October 2012.
