Ellen Whyte bringing the blues to Estacada

Estacada Together is proud to be sponsoring this school/community program featuring award-winning blues musician Ellen Whyte. It began last December with a wonderful holiday performance by her trio — Ellen, Jean and Gene — and is continuing through spring.

Highlights include:

n “Ellen Whyte and Her Plus-Size Band.” A March 8 concert at the Estacada Auditorium of her 9-piece blues band. The EHS Concert Choir will accompany Ellen on an original song and the Junior High Choir will perform a traditional blues song.

n A two-month artist residency at Estacada Junior High. Ellen will be working with all seventh and eighth grade students through Mr. Tripp and Mr. Davidson’s social studies classes. They will study the heritage of this American art form and each class will write and learn to perform a blues song.

n “From African Rhythms to American Blues.” An April 9 culminating concert performance at the auditorium by Ellen and students of the class songs written during the residency.

n A four-session workshop on blues singing, open to the community, in April and May. Times and place to be determined.

Funding for “Ellen Whyte Brings the Blues to Estacada” has been generously provided by grants from the Regional Arts and Culture Council/Work for Art, The Collins Foundation, Estacada Community Foundation, Estacada Area Literary Foundation and the Clackamas County Cultural Coalition (made possible by funding from Oregon Cultural Trust and managed by the Clackamas County Arts Alliance).

Estacada Together is grateful for this support and for our funders’ understanding of the importance of arts experiences for the community and for student learning.
