Sisters succeed at drag racing

by: CONTRIBUTED PHOTO - Haley and Jessie Skerjanec show off their hard-earned trophies. Estacada residents Jessie and Haley Skerjanec both won their respective classes during the 2012 racing season at Woodburn Race Track.

Haley Skerjanec, a seventh-grader at Estacada Junior High, won the Junior Thunder Championship in 2012. She has been racing for three years and this is her second championship, as she also won the 8-9 year class in 2010. The 2012 fall season was filled with great racers and she just edged out the Division 6 Racer of the Year.

Jessie Skerjanec is a freshman at Estacada High and had more than 25 competitors in the fast class and finished the year by winning with more than 600 points and 24 round wins. Her runner-up was fellow Estacada High School student Dustin Day.

Both girls have hung up their racing suits this year to concentrate on their hobbies. Haley raises miniature Nubian goats and Jessie raises, breeds and trains miniature horses.

Junior drag racing is held on an eighth of a mile course, 660 feet, with the Junior Thunder speed at 75 miles per hour and the Junior Fast at 85.
