Choir places third in state

by: CONTRIBUTED PHOTO: RENDELL FRUNK - The Estacada High School choir shows its silly side after working hard to make it to the OSAA State Choir Championship.Estacada High School Choir Director Rendell Frunk couldn’t be prouder of his concert choir’s success at the Oregon School Activities Association State Choir Championships.

The competition took place May 9-11 at George Fox University.

The EHS choir earned the honor of competing in the state championships after winning the Tri-Valley District Competition.

The EHS choir placed third in the competition, the highest placement Estacada has earned at a state choral event in its history.

In addition, out of 64 schools, the EHS choir got the third-highest score for sight-reading.

The choir performed Festival Sanctus by John Leavitt, Adoramus Te by Palestrina, Willie Taylor by Stephen Hatfield, Good Night Dear Heart by Dan Forest and Wade In the Water by Moses Hogan.

“It was one of, if not the most, artistic performances that I have had the honor to conduct in the past 18 years,” Frunk wrote.

The choir had been preparing the five-song selection since January.

“The choir worked incredibly hard on the literature, focusing on every small detail. Our biggest challenge this year was to not only sing the songs but to also tell the story of each piece of music,” Frunk wrote.

For Frunk, the choir’s performance at the state contest was its best of the year.

Frunk credits accompanist Linda Roth with a great deal of the choir’s success. He called her accompaniment during rehearsals “invaluable.”
