“Summer reading is a staple of libraries across the United States,” library director Michele Kinnamon said. “It helps kids keep their skills up over summer break.”

Kids have plenty of incentive to participate.

When participants meet the reading goals for their age group, they earn raffle tickets for prizes.

Should a summer reader like to give themselves an extra challenge, they may write a report or poem or other project to be entered for the grand prize drawings.

Two lucky grand prize winners age 12 or under will win Razor scooters and helmets.

by: ISABEL GAUTSCHI - Austin Puetz is already half-way through his first summer reading program book. Puetz, who will be a junior at Estacada High School in the fall, is volunteering for the Estacada Public Library's summer reading program. The library also offers a series of programs in this year’s science theme: “Fizz, Boom, Read!”

Adults have an opportunity to join in the fun through an adult summer reading program. Adult participants also have the opportunity to be entered into raffles to win prizes.

“The idea is families should read together because parents are their kids’ role models and when parents read it encourages their kids to read,” said Kinnamon.

Sign-up for the summer reading program is open until Saturday, July 26.

For more information, stop by the library at 825 N.W. Wade St. or call 503-630-8273.
