Looking forward to the Fourth

Parade

The day’s celebration kicks off at 10 a.m. Friday, July 4, 2014, with the Chamber of Commerce’s parade.

City leaders have been making strides toward turning Estacada into a cycling haven, so it’s only fitting that “bicycling” is the theme of the 2014 parade.

Representatives of Reliance Connects will serve as grand marshals.

The parade begins at Estacada High School and travels down Main Street, turns on Fourth Avenue and goes back up Broadway to finally disband back at the high school.

Expect elaborate floats.

If you are interested in being in the parade, applications are available at www.estacadachamber.org.

Timber Festival

The Timber Festival has long been a hallmark of Estacada and was brought back in 2012 after being discontinued for a spell.

Since the return of the Timber Festival, the popular event has drawn hordes to the area to watch the logging competitions, browse interesting vendors, enjoy live music and savor excellent food.

This year’s logging events include horse pulling, log loading, a truck show ‘n’ shine, axe throwing, choker setting, bucking, log rolling, stock saw, hot saw, pole climbing, kids’ choker setting and more.

Some of the competitions encompass old-time practices and techniques, so the show is almost a history of logging.

Many of the competitors are local loggers.

Several kid-friendly draws are planned. For example, there will be exotic animals from non-profit animal rescue group A Walk on the Wild Side and the Timber Clown will be back.

Event organizers are thrilled that PGE is allowing the 2014 festival to be held in Timber Park, the historic site for the event.

“We’ve come full circle. It’s back to where it all began,” said Sean Drinkwine, Estacada Area Community Events president.

The festival runs from noon to 11 p.m., Friday, July, 4, at Timber Park, 30878 N.W. Evergreen Way.
