Back To School Blast

Timber Lake Job Corps 50th Anniversary

Timber Lake Job Corps will celebrate its 50th birthday Friday, Aug. 22.

Tours of the Timber Lake Civilian Conservation Center will be offered from 10 a.m. to noon, a complimentary barbecue prepared by the culinary arts students will be served at noon with live entertainment during the meal.

A graduation ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. in the gym.

John Valley, a field representative for U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley, and the former Associate Deputy Chief for the national headquarters of the National Forest System and current Pacific Northwest Regional Forester Jim Pena will speak at the graduation.

Timber Lake Job Corps is at 59868 East Highway 224, about a 30-45 minute drive from Estacada. There is no cell phone service at the center.

1974 Class Reunion

A reunion will be held for Estacada High School Class of 1974, Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 23-24.

Classic car show benefit

The Cruise2Barton Cruise-In and Car Show will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at Barton Community Baptist Church, 25400 S.E. Highway 224, Boring. Raffle drawings all day, hourly race car “fire ups” and awards at 1 p.m. Proceeds benefit Barton Church missions. More info at 503-637-3258.

Blood drive

The Red Cross is holding a blood drive 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Estacada City Hall, 275 S.E. Main Street. The Red Cross stated in a press release that donating blood may save up to three lives. Appointments are recommended, call 1-800-RED-CROSS to schedule.

EZVideo demo night

Reliance Connects has launched a new service called EZVideo. The service works by providing local channels such as 2,6,8,10 and 12 over a Roku streaming device. As the service is new, the company will offer a demonstration of how to use it 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28 6-8 p.m. at City Hall, 475 S.E. Main St.


Mikael Pederson to play Farmers Market

Concrete yard art class

Learn to make concrete yard art from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9 at Wade Creek House, 664 N.W. Wade Street. You’ll have the opportunity to create a custom concrete stepping stone or a concrete tic-tac-toe game board game. The class costs $25. Materials are included in the price. “The Ballad of Cate Parks”

A series of mixed-media art works by local artist Nina Bradford are on display at the Estacada Public Library through Sept. 22.

While walking the paths along Burrard Inlet at Cates Park in Vancouver, B.C., Bradford came up with the fictional story of a young woman living in the 1800s who fell in love with a sailor.

The series is a visual diary of Cate Parks and presents not only the joy of love and sorrow of loss, but the relationship between people and the objects and world in which they live.

The show is presented in partnership with the Estacada Area Arts Commission.

Spinning group

The Estacada spinning and fiber arts group meets from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Fridays at Betty Veveiros CPA, 309 S.W. Highway 224.


Casino trip

The Estacada Community Center is planning a trip to Spirit Mountain Casino on Tuesday, Aug. 12. The group will leave the Center at 7:30 a.m. and return around 4 p.m. Transportation costs $20 a person. Only those 21 and over may go. Call 503-630-7454 to reserve a spot. At least eight people must sign up for the trip to happen.


Vortex I: A Biodegradable Festival of Life

Milo McIver State Park Rangers will present a free program on Vortex I, the legendary1970 state-sponsored rock festival, from 7-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7 at the Estacada Public Library, 825 N.W. Wade Street.

Enjoy refreshments while listening to a recording of Governor Tom McCall’s first emergency broadcast announcing the festival, intended to distract anti-war protestors from a scheduled visit by President Richard Nixon to downtown Portland. For more information call the library at 503-630-8273.

Computer tutorials

Computer tutorials are offered 10-11:30 a.m. Wednesdays and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. every other Saturday at the Estacada Public Library, 825 N.W. Wade Street.

The tutorials are one-on-one sessions with an expert to improve computer skills.

Free Summer Meal Program

The Estacada School District is offering free meals to children ages 18 and under at four sites through Aug. 15.

Breakfast will be served from 8:30-9 a.m. Monday through Friday at Clackamas River Elementary, 301 N.E. Second Ave.

Lunches will be available noon to 1 p.m. Monday-Friday at Clackamas River Elementary; 11:20-11:50 a.m. Monday-Friday at Eagle Crest Mobile Estates, 25800 S.E. Eagle Creek Rd; noon to 12:30 p.m. Monday-Friday at Eagle Creek Elementary, 30391 S.E. Highway 211 and noon to 12:30 p.m. Monday-Friday at Wade Creek Park, 747 S.W. Wade Street. Adults may purchase breakfast for $2.50 and lunch for $3.50.


Philip Foster Farm

Philip Foster Farm is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday, through Aug. 30. The farm is geared toward all things pioneer and offers guests of all ages a variety of activities and an intimate look at one of Oregon’s first families.

Guides are dressed in period costume. Admission is $5 per person or $20 for a family. Annual memberships are available for $15 per person or $35 per family. Members may visit the farm for free throughout 2014.

Broadway Streetscape public outreach meeting

The city of Estacada will host its second public information meeting on the Broadway Streetscape Project from 6:30-8 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 19, at Estacada City Hall. This month’s meeting will focus on design review and public art. The Sept. 16 meeting, same time and place, will focus on design review and parking. Ranger guided canoe and kayak tours

Milo McIver State Park Rangers will lead canoe and kayak tours of the River Mill Reservoir throughout the summer.

The tours are an opportunity to learn about the history and ecology of the reservoir and to see a variety of plants and animals.

Participants must be at least 6 years old, and anyone under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Kids ages 6-12 may not kayak on their own, but must be in a double kayak with an adult.

Canoe tours are led from 6-8 p.m. Mondays. Kayak tours are 6-8 p.m. Thursdays and 7:30-9:30 a.m. Sundays.

The tours cost $15 per person. Kayaks, paddles and life jackets are included in the cost.

The next meeting of the Clackamas County chapter of Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) is 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26 at the Atkinson Memorial Church, 710 Sixth Street, Oregon City.

Grief Share

The Grief Share group helps those who have lost a loved one find comfort and acceptance and to find the joy that remains in their lives. Confidentiality is required of all who attend. If someone’s drinking bothers you, Al-Anon and Alateen can help. Meetings are available just a 20 minute drive from Estacada at Eastridge Church, 14100 S.E. Sunnyside Road, Clackamas.
