Improvisers of all skill levels welcome at workshops
Sometimes, the best moments in theater are unscripted.
This is something members of the Performing Arts Group of Estacada are keeping in mind with their latest project — a series of comedy improv workshops.
Open to participants of all skill levels, the classes are scheduled from 2-3 p.m. Aug. 6, 13, 20 and 27 in the Flora Room of the Estacada Public Library, 825 N.W. Wade St. Participants can attend every class or simply drop in as their schedules allow.
Jean Hiebert Larson, president of the Performing Arts Group of Estacada, said the workshops will focus on the basics of improv.
"The focus is on establishing the foundation of improv," she said. "There are certain rules, like you always agree with your partner (during the situations you create)."
The classes will also feature a variety of games to help cultivate improv skills. Participants are put in different scenarios and make up the dialogue and actions in an impromptu manner, instead of working from a script.
The classes are open to anyone age 13 or older, and Hiebert Larson hopes a wide variety of people attend.
"Hopefully we get a broad age range," she said. "The hope is to get new people involved with PAGE."
She encouraged anyone interested to come to the workshops, even if they're nervous about performing in front of others.
"It's OK to sit and watch," she said. "Know that we all have times where we make ourselves look like fools. It's OK to laugh about yourself. The goal is to establish a safe environment."
Hiebert Larson noted that improv is a valuable tool for live shows and the moments for which performers cannot plan.
"On stage, your partner could forget the lines, and improv is a great way to lead them back to the script," she said.
Improv's uses aren't limited to the theater world, either.
"There are a lot of everyday life skills you can learn from improv," Hiebert Larson said. "More confidence, collaboration, the principle of always saying yes."
