It’s been a very good week for the Estacada High School boys varsity basketball team, with a pair of close games resulting in wins.

On Tuesday, Dec. 11, the Rangers squad traveled to Portland’s Rose Garden to face Banks.

Estacada was down 12-11 at the end of the first quarter, but led 26-21 at the half. That lead swung back the other way, with Banks up 34-31 at the end of the third quarter.

By the end, though, the Rangers came out ahead 47-46, aided by a last-minute, full-court run and layup by senior guard Ryan Vauthier.

“That was a great ball game,” coach Kevin Kirchhofer said.

Vauthier racked up a total of 17 points for the game, helped by a 7-for-10 performance from the free-throw line. Junior post Marshall Cantele also had a strong showing, going 4 for 6 from the floor for 9 points. Sophomore post Will Blankenship contributed 7 points to the winning effort.

The scene was much the same Friday, Dec. 14, when the team played on the road at Yamill-Carlton.

Despite a slow start, the Rangers pulled together a 49-46 win. Vauthier again lead the team in scoring with 28 points. He went 8 for 10 from the free-throw line and 9 for 17 from the floor, including two three-point shots.

Cantele went 4 for 6 from the floor. Blankenship scored 9 points, senior guard Bryan Rhone grabbed 11 rebounds, and junior guard Chris Smith got 7, along with three assists, some offensive rebounds and four steals.

“He was a big spark defensively for us,” Kirchhofer said.

Up next for the team is the Seaside Tournament, scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 20, through Saturday, Dec. 22. Kirchhofer said the tournament always offers up good competition, and will include teams from La Pine, Central Linn, Seaside and Madras.

If the Rangers can continue successfully rebounding and limit their turnovers, Kirchhofer said, they can expect to do well and keep their winning streak alive.
