Rangers win at home, lose at La Salle

Team beats North Marion in Estacada, drops road game

After an impressive home win against the North Marion Huskies, the Estacada High School varsity boys basketball team was unable to overcome the offensive onslaught by La Salle.

The Rangers hosted the Huskies on Tuesday, Feb. 12, and led from the moment the game started.

Senior Ryan Vauthier dictated the tempo, and was assisted by a strong rebounding effort by senior Jacob Lensch.

Estacada boasted a 12-point halftime lead, and kept that pace going until the final buzzer.

Defensively, the Rangers dened the Huskies any opportunity at offensive rebounds. Estacada also made much use of its passing game in the impressive 63-43 win.

That success was not duplicated three nights later, when the Rangers headed to La Salle.

“This was La Salle’s senior night, so they started seniors that do not usually start,” Rangers coach Kevin Kirchhofer said.

La Salle brought its regular starters in, but the Rangers still held firm, taking good care of the ball against the press and “attacking the paint against their big men,” Kirchhofer said.

Estacada was down by three as the first quarter came to a close, but Vauthier hit a three-pointer to tie it at 16.

A series of second-quarter turnovers resulted in the Rangers being down 28-22 at halftime. La Salle continued at that level of play, scoring 16 points in the third quarter and leading 44-29 heading into the fourth.

“Finally, in the fourth, we settled down and played a lot smarter basketball,” Kirchhofer said.

Still, La Salle scored 14 points in the final quarter and won 58-45.

Lensch scored 18 points for the Rangers, and junior Alec Barstad added 15.
