Wenlund takes second at state tourney

Davidson, Cole also have strong showings

For weeks, Estacada High School junior Donny Wenlund has been focused on one thing — doing at least as well at the state wrestling tournament as he did last year.

Wenlund was able to achieve his goal, as he finished second in the 4A 120-pound division at state, which took place Feb. 22-23 at the Portland Memorial Coliseum.

Seven Estacada wrestlers qualified to compete at state with impressive performances at the regional tournament held Saturday, Feb. 16, in Scappoose. They included sophomore Stone Rathbun, who wrestled at 132, senior Dillen Abbett at 195, junior Luke Youngberg at 160 and freshman Nick Ledbury at 182.

In the first round of the tournament, Wenlund faced off against Sweet Home junior Anthony Hardee and won 12-4. He then wrestled Madras senior Lane McDonald and won 11-8.

Wenlund went on to defeat McLoughlin freshman Cole Skramstad 4-0, sending him to the final round. There, Wenlund squared off against Ronnie Bresser, a senior from Henley.

Bresser won a technical fall with just over one minute to go, earning the top spot in the division with Wenlund coming in second.

Senior Jake Davidson enjoyed similar success at the tournament, finishing fourth in the 145-pound division. Travis Cole, another senior, placed fifth at 152 pounds.
