Estacadas Luis Drexler surrendered only four games during the entire tournament to claim the District 2 singles crown last week at the Portland Tennis Center. He dispatched Centrals Alejandro Echeverri 6-0, 6-1 in the championship match and has earned the No. 4 seed for the small-school state tournament in Eugene. He opens play on Friday morning.
On the girls side, Estacadas Sarah Reynolds and Maddy Dinsdale each reached the singles quarterfinals, while Melissa Nuno and Allyson Wickerham claimed a 7-5, 6-2 win in the first round of doubles.
Callahan wins javelin in South Region
Estacada High graduate Tyler Callahan, a sophomore at Mt. Hood CC, won the javelin event at last weekends South Region championships with a heave of 219-feet-4-inches. He tossed the spear more than 50 feet farther than anyone else in the field.
Callahan also took third in the discus and was ninth in the shot put.
Mount Hood Pond hosts fishing event
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is hosting a youth fishing clinic at the Mt. Hood Pond, located on the Mt. Hood CC campus in Gresham on Saturday, May 18. Volunteers will be on hand to instruct anglers on baiting a hook and cleaning fish. Participants ages 13-and-younger are free, while ages 14-17 are required to have a juvenile fishing license ($9), which must be purchased before coming to the event.
